NASCAR Pole Qualifying At Talladega

Welcome NASCAR race fans to my NASCAR blog. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series held the Coors Light Pole Qualifying on Saturday for their Good Sam Club 500 race on Sunday. 47 teams showed up to qualify and four will go home. Qualifying line up is determined by practice speeds on Friday, with the slowest qualifying first and the fastest coming onto the track last. Today the fastest were 16 Greg Biffle and 99 Carl Edwards. However, three drivers who must make the field on time were the final qualifiers. (I am unsure why this was. Something about not getting onto the track for practice because they were held up during inspection.) This is an impound race, meaning that there will be no practice prior to the race and the teams will not be able to make any adjustments.

Kyle Busch cut a tire during practice and is in a back-up car for qualifying. As they start qualifying, his car is still undergoing inspection. The car is ready when it is his turn. The windshields of three MWR cars were confiscated during inspection as they gave the car an aerodynamic advantage. Penalties will probably be handed out on Tuesday.

5 Mark Martin came out 42nd and took the Pole away from team mate 48 Jimmie Johnson. This was his 51st career Pole. Mark ran a speed of 181.367 mph and 52.799 seconds around this enormous 2.66 mile track. Jimmie will start second. Clint Bowyer qualified third, followed by Trevor Bayne, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Paul Menard, David Ragan, Carl Edwards and Ryan Newman. Geoffrey Bodine, Scott Speed, T. J. Bell and Josh Wise failed to qualify for the race. (In the photo above, 88 pushed 48 for the win in the Spring. The three leaders were inches apart. Second place, 33 was .002 seconds behind!)

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series qualified for the Coca-Cola 250 on Friday. 31 James Buescher will be starting the race on Saturday from the Pole with a speed of 177.676 mph and 53.896 seconds. 8 Nelson Piquet, Jr. will be starting second. Jennifer Jo Cobb, Norm Benning, Mike Harmon and Clay Greenfield did not qualify for the race.

I shall return after the Truck race with the results.

Brought to you by Sheila Hawley. I love NASCAR racing.
