NASCAR News And Race Review

by

Welcome NASCAR race fans to my NASCAR blog. NASCAR is at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, GA., south of Atlanta this weekend. I’m sure there was practice for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on Friday before they qualified for the Good Sam Club 200 that was raced Friday night. The practice session(s) was/ were not televised. The NASCAR Nationwide Series will be qualifying for and racing in the Great Clips 300 on Saturday. I don’t know if they had a practice session or not. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will race the AdvoCare 500 on Sunday and qualify on Saturday. I did get to see a practice session before the Trucks qualified.

With the slowest trucks coming out first in qualifying and the fastest coming out last, there could be a new pole sitter as each truck qualifies. And there were seven pole sitters in a row! 20 Johanna Long knocked 98 Justin Marks off and sat on the pole for quite some time before 18 kyle Busch knocked her off. 31 James Buescher came out next and took the provisional pole and 2 Clint Bowyer took it from Buescher. But 4 Ricky Carmichael was fastest in practice and came out last. Ricky Captured the Pole position with a speed of 177.812 mph and 31.179 seconds around this 1.54 mile track, his first career Pole.

4 Carmichael chooses the outside and races 2 Bowyer for the lead but 2ddrives under 4 and leads the first lap. 18 and 60 Cole Whitt get by 31. 18 gets by 29 Parker Kligerman for third. 60 gets by 29. 88 Matt Crafton and 60 race side by side for position. The first caution comes out when 60, in fourth, blows up. 17 Timothy Peters changes his battery. 39 Ryan Sieg gets back onto the lead lap. 2 and 18 battle for the lead. 2 keeps the lead. 18 bumps 2 for the lead but 2 stays in the lead. 13 Johnny Sauter and 8 Nelson Piquet, Jr. get together with 62 Brendan Gaughn running on top.

The second caution comes out when 78 B. J. Mcleod abruptly heads for the pits and 20 runs into 78. 10 Jennifer Jo Cobb  gets the free pass. 2 heads for the pits but 18 stays out, so Bowyer changes his mind and looses the lead. 2 and 18 battle for the lead, 18 makes contact with 2 and they race side by side,by side. 2 gets sideways. 13 has a flat tire and brushes the wall. 2 and 18 battle for the lead, 18 gets sideways and 2 takes the lead and runs away. 13 is back in the pits. The third caution is for debris. 10 Jennifer Jo Cobb is again the Lucky Dog. In the pits a 4 crewman falls down in front of the truck, so he has to wait to get out of his pit. 32 Blake Feese and 15 Josh Richards get together. They both save it. But the caution comes out for debris. 66 Chris Cockrum gets the free pass.

08 Ryan Newman dives low to make it three wide for the lead. 2 takes the lead and 08 takes second. The fifth caution comes out when 17 gets a flat tire and knocks the battery out! 32 Blake Feese gets back onto the lead lap. 2 and 88 battle for the lead. 29 gets by 88 for second. 88 gets by 29 for second. In the pack, they are four wide and 15 slips back. 18 gets by 29 for second. 88 races 5 Todd Bodine. 88 gets loose and 5 and 3 Austin Dillon get by. 2 is 5.3 seconds ahead of 18 when Green Flag Pitting starts. 2 pits and 3 leads. 33 Ron Hornaday, Jr.  leads. 15 is too fast. 3 gets by 33 to get his lap back. 2 gets by 32 for second. But there is not enough time to catch 33.

33 Ron Hornaday, Jr. wins the Good Sam Club 200 race, his forty-ninth career win. He would not have won the race if the caution had come out. But it sure was nice to see a Truck driver win a Truck race. KHI finished first and second again. Busch finished third, followed by Feese, Newman, Dillon, Crafton, Carmichael, Bodine and Buescher to round out the top ten. Pit strategy won the race. 2 and 18 had to pit and couldn’t catch 33. 2 Bowyer started and finished in the second position. With his tenth place finish, Buescher takes over the points lead from Sauter followed by Peters and Dillon. Hornaday moves up four spots into fifth. Joey Coulter and Crafton stay in sixth and seventh. Whitt falls three spots while kligerman falls one spot. Bodine stays in tenth in points.

Brought to you by Sheila Hawley. I love NASCAR racing.
