NASCAR race Review: Nationwide 5-hour Energy 200

Welcome NASCAR race fans to my NASCAR blog. The NASCAR Nationwide Series raced the 5-hour Energy 200 at Dover International Speedway on Saturday after rain delayed things. Qualifying was rained out and the line up was set according to the Rule Book with 60 Carl Edwards starting from the pole position and team mate 6 Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. beside him. Carl is ineligible for driver points in this Series. There will be a competition caution on lap 40 because of the rain and no rubber on the track they may not fuel the car before lap 40. 64 David Reutimann missed the driver meeting and has to start the race from the rear. (It would be just fine with me if all the Sprint Cup drivers had to start these Nationwide races from the rear.) 7 or 8 (the announcers weren’t sure which) drivers have never been to the Monster Mile. Nine previous winners are in this race. (From the way the announcers are talking, you’d think 18 Kyle Busch was starting from the pole!)

60 starts the race on the inside and 6 leads the first lap. The first caution comes out on lap 2. 19 Mike Bliss gets into 81 Donny Neuenberger, who gets into 82 Blake Koch before they completed the first lap. 82 has radiator damage. 6 takes the outside and leads the race. 33 Clint Bowyer gets by 60 for second. 18 Kyle Busch gets into 22 Brad Keselowski to get by.

The second caution comes out on lap 20. 52 Kevin Lepage gets into the turn three wall. 6 chooses the outside and 33 takes the lead. 31 Justin  Allgaier gets by 60 for third. 60 gets back by 31 (Those Sprint Cup drivers are better than those Nationwide drivers!) 20 Joey Logano and 18 race side by side and 20 and 32 Reed Sorenson get by 18. 6 takes the lead. 11 Brian Scott drives under 31. 7 Josh Wise, 99 Ryan Truex and 16 Kevin Swindell battle each other.

The third caution is the Competition Caution on lap 40. 60 leads after the pitting. 33 drives under 60 for the lead. The fourth caution comes out when 11 spins and slides into the inside wall. 60 takes the lead. The fifth caution comes out on lap 87. 16 pulls in front of and into 23 Alex Kennedy slips off turn turn 2. They restart on lap 100 with 22 leading. 60 drives around 22 to lead. 20 is catching leader 60 when the sixth caution comes out on lap 140. 31 cuts a tire and slams into the turn 4 wall. The hood ends on his windshield! 7 Wise stays out to lead.

The seventh caution turns into a Red Flag with 56 laps to go for rain. After drying the track, 7 doesn’t get going and pits for fuel. 60 chooses the inside and 20 takes the lead. 32 drives under 18 for fifth. With fifteen laps to go 20 and 60 battle for the lead and 60 takes the lead. The eighth caution comes out on lap 197 when 62 Michael Annett slides down the front stretch. 99 runs out of fuel and gets stuck on the track so they call off the Green Flag until the car can be pushed into the pits. This will be the first attempt for a Green White Checker Finish.

60 jumps the restart and gets into 20 so the ninth caution comes out to reset the field. Everyone is running on the apron so the fuel will pick up. The restart will be the second attempt at a Green White Checker Finish. Coming to the White Flag, 60 and 20 are side by side, 60 sends 20 into the wall with him coming down the track and 33 flying into and over 20 and with 22 and 18 with much damage. So, 60 Carl Edwards, who took out his fellow Sprint Cup drivers to finish first, wins the 5-hour Energy 200. And 18 kyle Busch finishes second despite not being a factor all race, by driving his damaged car around again. 32 Reed Sorenson was the best finishing Nationwide driver by finishing third. 6 Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. was fourth, 64 Cup Driver David Reutimann fifth. I have to wonder what these Sprint Cup drivers are supposed to be teaching these young Nationwide drivers. How to get into each other? Heck, everyone already  knows that. It looked to me like the Nationwide drivers were the better drivers. Sorenson’s third place was much nicer to see than Carl’s win.
