NASCAR Race Review: Jeff Byrd 500

by

Welcome NASCAR race fans to my NASCAR blog. This week the NASCAR Spint Cup Series is at the Bristol Motor Speedway for the Jeff Byrd 500 presented by Food City. Jeff Byrd is the long time general manager of the speedway who passed on last year. Trevor Bayne led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

99 Carl Edwards starts from the pole with a fast time of 128.014 mph and 14.98 seconds. Team mate 16 Greg Biffle starts beside him on the front row. 48 Jimmie Johnson is the defending champion of the race. 18 Kyle Busch won the Nationwide race on Saturday. Can he win this one to make it a sweep of the weekend? Back in August he won the races in all three top Series’. That would make it 5 wins in a row in Thunder Valley. His brother Kurt (22) has five wins here. Can he make it six and be the winningest active driver here? (That is, in Cup wins only. This is Cup racing, after all.) There will be a competition caution after lap 50 to check the new tires. If there is a caution before that, they may pit, but cannot take fuel.

So, here we go! 99 leads from the pole. 16 and 48 almost touch battling for third. 22 and 9 Marcos Ambrose race side by side. 4 Kasey Kahne gets by 78 Regan Smith. 18 can’t get by 16. 27 Paul Menard takes the lead. 24 Jeff Gordon is loose and loosing spots. 39 Ryan Newman and 2 Brad Keselowski race side by side. 48 gets by 99 for second.

The first caution comes out during the commercial. 31 Jeff Burton gets loose and there’s a bottleneck behind him, including 1 Jamie McMurray, 2, 83 Brian Vickers, 00 David Reutimann. 87 Joe Nemechek takes fuel and gets a penalty. 27 chooses the outside. 27 and 48 battle for the lead. 18 goes under 99 for third. The second caution is the competition caution on lap 51. 11 Denny Hamlin gets back onto the lead lap. 34 David Gilliland stays out to lead along with 7 Robby Gordon and 87. 87 pits next time around.

39 takes the lead. 18 and 56 Martin Truex, Jr. get by 34. 29 Kevin Harvick gets into 7 to get by. 48 gets by 7. 18 catches leader 39. 31 has a vibration and pits. It was a loose wheel and he will go two laps down. 18 takes the lead in traffic. 56 gets by 39 for second. 56 takes the lead on the outside.

The third caution comes out when 7 gets a right front flat and gets into the wall. 88 Dale Earnhardt, Jr. gets back onto the lead lap. 18 and 29 battle for third. The fourth caution comes out when 2 blows a tire and slides across the track. 29 and 56 battle for the lead and 29 takes the lead. 18 gets by 22 for third. 48 takes the lead. 18 gets by 29 in traffic for second. 22 gets back by 99 for fifth.

The fifth caution comes out during the commercial.27 and 47 Bobby Labonte get together and 47 spins. He stays on the lead lap. 33 Clint Bowyer gets back onto the lead lap. 48 and 18 battle for the lead. 42 is in the way with a loose tire and finds the bottom to pit. 21 Trevor Bayne gets into the wall but keeps going and there is no caution. 48 takes the lead.

The sixth caution comes out for debris. 9 stays on the lead lap. 56 Martin Truex, Jr. gets back on the lead lap. 48 chooses the outside for the restart. 22 gets by 18 for second. 18 gets by 99 for third. The seventh caution comes out when 34 Gilliland gets into the wall. 14 Tony Stewart gets his lap back. 18 comes out of the pits first to lead the race. 88 was too fast. 99 gets by 48 for second.

The eighth caution comes out when 4 Kasey Kahne gets loose and there is an accordion effect behind him. 29, racing 4 gets between 4 and 5 Martin and 5 spins 29.  The ninth caution comes out when 38 Travis Kvapil spins. 6 David Ragan gets back onto the lead lap.

The tenth caution comes out when 33 blows up and there may be fluid on the track. He heads for the garage. 2 Brad Keselowski gets his lap back. 18 chooses the outside for the restart. 18 and 99 battle for the lead with 48 right behind them. 20 Joey Logano gets into the wall and pits. 99 and 48 can’t get to 18, even in traffic. 18 Kyle Busch wins the Jeff Byrd 500 and sweeps the weekend. There were eight different leaders, with Jimmie Johnson leading the most laps. Kurt Busch takes over the points lead with Edwards moving up a spot to second. Stewart drops to third.
