NASCAR Racing: Bristol Motor Speedway

by

Welcome NASCAR race fans to my NASCAR blog. With only three more races until the chase starts, (does this make my post more exciting because I mentioned the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup?) The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series travels to Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tn. for the Irwin Tools Night Race, the 24th race of the season. This .533 mile concrete track always has the second event at night. In March, Jimmie Johnson won for the first time at this track. It was also his 50th career win. We’ll see if he can sweep the races at this track.

Festivities started early this week. On Wednesday the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series qualified and raced the O’Reilly 200, also a night race. Kyle Busch won the Coors Light Pole Award, but made changes to his truck and had to start the race from the rear. Some say it was exciting watching him come from behind to win the race, but he did turn rookie Jennifer Jo Cobb in the 10 truck on his way up the field. And I have to ask why he needed to turn her to get by. 5 Mike Skinner was leading when a caution came out and he pitted. Kyle didn’t. There was a Green White Checker Finish, with Kyle running out of fuel shortly after the victory.

Also on track on Wednesday, were the Whelen Modified cars. Now, that was a great race! There was a heated battle for the lead between 13 Ted Christopher and 16 Mike Stefanik, with them trading the lead back and forth in traffic. Ultimately, 7 Sprint Cup star Ryan Newman came up from fourth to take the lead. The 13 blew up and 16 and 7 battled to the end, with Newman winning. This is his second Modifieds win this year.

Thursday is an off-day. I’m sure racing is going on, but it won’t be televised. On Friday, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will have Coors Light Pole qualifying, as will the NASCAR Nationwide Series. And the Nationwide Series will race on Friday night. The Irwin Tools Night Race will be on Saturday night. Until Friday…

Brought to you by Sheila Hawley. I love NASCAR.
