NASCAR Racing: Michigan International Speedway

by

Welcome NASCAR race fans to my NASCAR blog. This week the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returns to the Irish Hills of Michigan for the Carfax 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, MI. This is the twenty-third race of the year, with only three more races after this to get into the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. This track is a D-shaped oval with lots of racing grooves and much room to race. One of my favorites to watch. The track is noted for only occasional Yellow Flags to slow the field down, as there is lots of room to race.

The NASCAR Nationwide Series is also here at this track with it’s new car. This is the second of four races that feature the new car. And Danica Patrick will be in the #7 car once again. They were allowed extra time for practice with the new car. Qualifying and the Nationwide race will be on Saturday.

11 Denny Hamlin won the race here in June. And Brian Vickers won the Carfax 400 last year from the pole. With that win, he was able to get into the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Practice was earlier today and 31 Jeff Burton was the fastest. Jeff qualified eleventh.

Coors Light Pole Qualifying took place this afternoon (Friday the thirteenth) with 9 Kasey Kahne grabbing the pole with a speed of 187.183 miles per hour and 38.465 seconds. 48 Jimmy Johnson will start beside Kasey on the front row. 32 Mike Bliss, 46 J. J. Yeley, 66 Scott Riggs and 36 Casey Mears failed to qualify.

Other points of interest: 19 Elliott Sadler is in a blue car with white stripes and Racing America on the hood. He came out first to qualify. 39 Ryan Newman is back in the Tornados car that he won in earlier this year. 83 is Reed Sorenson. Paul Menard will be in a fourth RCR car in 2011 with his Dad’s Sponsor, Menard’s. 43 A. J. Allmendinger has secured his place with Richard Petty Motorsports. Kasey Kahne has a contract with Hendrick for 2012 and will drive for Red Bull Racing in 2011. 1 Jamie McMurray is driving a blue Norelco car. 34 is Tony Raines. Kevin Conway and his sponsor Extends have pulled out of the team. Bobby Labonte is back in the 71 car. 7 is P. J. Jones in the Robby Gordon car. Robby is driving the 07 car. Bill Elliott is back in the 21 car. 09 is Rookie Landon Cassill. 26 is Patrick Carpentier with AIR National Guard as the Sponsor.

Brought to you by Sheila Hawley. I love NASCAR.
