NASCAR Race Review: Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips At The Glen

by

Welcome NASCAR race fans to my NASCAR blog. The twenty-second race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Season is the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, NY. This is the second road course race of the year. Much has been done to improve this track from the race of last year. And because of the changes, there should be less caution laps. The “kitty litter” is mostly gone so there will be no having to pull the cars out of there.

As usual at a road course, several road “aces” entered the field. Tony Ave in the 35 failed to make the race, along with 66 Dave Blaney and 46 J. J. Yeley. 36 is Ron Fellows. 71 is Andy Lally. 26 is Patrick Carpentier. 07 is P. J. Jones. 83 is Boris Said.

Coors Light Pole Qualifying took place this week on Saturday morning instead of the usual Friday afternoon. They were each allowed one lap around the 2.45 mile winding track, with 99 Carl Edwards capturing the pole position with a speed of 124.432 and 70.882 seconds. 1 Jamie McMurray starts on the front row with him.

As the race is about to get underway, 18 Kyle Busch makes a pit stop to fix the aluminum spacer. The weights were rolling around inside. He will join 12 Brad Keselowski in the rear of the field. 12 had to change the engine.

So, here we go! 99 starts out in front, but 1 leads the first lap. 42 Juan Pablo Montoya and 43 A. J. Allmendinger get by 99. 16 Greg Biffle gets by 99. 42 catches 1 and 1 lets him by for the lead. 34 Kevin Conway gets into the grass. 47 Marcos Ambrose gets by 2 Kurt Busch for sixth. 83 and 77 Sam Hornish, Jr. get by 48 Jimmie Johnson. 7 Robby Gordon and 24 Jeff Gordon get by 48.

47 gets by 99 for fourth. 48 is pitting with something wrong. A tire is going down. At these road courses, you can make a pit stop without loosing a lap. 82 Scott Speed is having gear box problems. 47 gets by 1 for third. 99 gets by 1 for fourth. 56 Martin Truex, Jr. gets by 7 for sixteenth. 7 is having transmission problems. 47 gets by 43 for third. 2 makes a pit stop and Green Flag Pitting begins. Actually, at a road course, you want to make your pit stop under Green. You don’t want to be caught leading when a caution comes out because you will loose all positions to make your pit stop. 42 pits and 47 takes the lead. After all the pitting, 42 is back in the lead.

The first caution comes out while 9 Kasey Kahne is in the pits. 07 is stuck in the runoff at the bus stop turn. NASCAR threw the caution after all the pitting had been completed. 11 Denny Hamlin and 1 battle for position, with 1 taking the position. 99 gets by 47 for second and 47 gets back by 99. 43 gets by 99. 47 is closing in on leader 42. The two of them are running away from the field. They battle for several laps before 47 finally takes the lead. (Now, THAT’s racing!)

The second caution comes out for two separate incidents. 09 Bobby Labonte gets stuck in the inner loop while 12 gets loose and into the guard rail. 78 Regan Smith also got into 36. Nineteenth place and on back make a pit stop. On the restart, 47 wheel hops and 2 and 43 get by. 24 battles 33 Clint Bowyer. 2 catches leader 42. 47 and 43 battle for third and 43 keeps the spot. 77 and 56 get together and 56 spins. 47 gets by 2 for second.

There is more Green Flag Pitting and 7 heads for the garage. 18 is overheating. 39 Ryan Newman leads. 33 drops a drive shaft and heads for the garage. 5 leads when the third caution comes out for the debris from 33.  The top three cars have not pitted and will have to now. 33 comes back onto the track three laps down. They restart with 26 laps to go. 16 gets sandwiched and falls from eighth to to twenty-fifth.

The fourth caution comes out when 14 and 83 were battling for position. 83 tries to move 14 off the track and 14 holds his line to spin 83. 83 backs into the barrier and they have to repair the barrier. 33 Clint Bowyer gets the free pass and is now two laps down.

They restart with 21 laps to go. The fifth caution comes out for spinning 48, who ends up in the wall and 11 smashes into 48 with all the smoke. 18, 31 Jeff Burton and 48 were three wide with 18 getting into 31 and 31 having nowhere to go but into 48. Burton said that was not a cool  place to try to pass. And Hamlin said they were dive bombing. 48 has to come in to repair the front splitter brace.33 is back on the lead lap.

On the restart, 2 gets by 47 for second. 7 is back out, thirteen laps down. 77 gets by 39. 29 Kevin Harvick and 14 battle, 14 gets loose and 29 gets by. 47 gets by 2 for second. 99 brushes the wall. 17 Matt Kenseth gets by 77. 56 gets by 77. 42 is pulling away.

The track bar mount is broken on 78, which gives him a flat tire. 7 is smoking. Both head for the garage. 29 gets by 1. 2 is closing in on 47 whose car isn’t working as well as it had been. 2 gets by 47 for second. And 42 Juan Pablo Montoya wins the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen. This is his second career win, both at road courses. There were five different leaders.
