Welcome NASCAR race fans to my NASCAR blog. This week The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is in Watkins Glen, NY at Watkins Glen International for the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen, the twenty-second race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season. The NASCAR Nationwide Series is also at Watkins Glen International.
For the Nationwide race, the Zippo 200, qualifying was European style. That is, the cars came out onto the track in groups. The slowest in practice came out first in sets of six cars. The fastest came out last in sets of five. That was fun to watch. 47 Marcos Ambrose captured the pole with 20 Joey Logano next to him. forty-three cars were entered and all forty-three are racing.
Coors Light Pole qualifying was next for NASCAR Sprint Cup series. This was the traditional one lap, one car at a time. 99 Carl Edwards starts on the pole with a speed of 124.432 mph and 70.882 seconds. 1 Jamie McMurray will be next to him on the front row for the race tomorrow. 35 Tony Ave, 66Ddave Blaney and 46 J. J. Yeley failed to qualify.
Next up was the Zippo 200 Nationwide race. Marcos Ambrose won from the pole position. I won’t go into the details because the reason for this post is that I had to go to my local track, which is near Watkins Glen, Shangri-La 2 Motor Speedway.
Tonight was NASCAR Night. Four NASCAR stars traveled to this track outside of Qwego, NY. Rusty Wallace, Kenny Wallace, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth were on hand. They used ASA Late Model cars from ones who were on the track earlier. They were fitted in the seats for the cars while time trials were going on. Then there was an autograph session with Kenny and Rusty Wallace sharing a table and Kenseth and Biffle sharing a table.
After the autograph session, Kenny, Matt and Greg put on a show, while Rusty did the announcing. They had never been in their cars and were told they could not ruin the cars because the regular drivers would be racing in the main event after the show. They had three laps to practice and Matt in the 53 was fastest. followed by Greg in the 13 and Kenny in the 8.
The race started with 8 first, followed by 13 and 53. They raced ten laps and 53 Kenseth again won. There was a pause for them to think about their cars, but no adjustments could be made. The second race had again 8 starting first, 13 second and 53 last. This time they raced eight laps. And again 53 Kenseth won. It was a great time for the fans. Especially if they were Matt Kenseth fans, which I am.
After the race, Rusty interviewed the drivers and everyone agreed that his track was a great track and maybe the NASCAR drivers could test on this track. Shangri-La Motor Speedway is a concrete track and could be used to test for Bristol Motor Speedway or Dover International Speedway. Or any other concrete track.
