NASCAR Racing: Dover

by

Welcome NASCAR race fans to my NASCAR blog. Last weekend I was at Dover International Speedway. And I told you about my weekend. Today I would like to review the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race, the Dover 200. Qualifying was Friday morning, with NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers, Kyle Busch and Elliott Sadler, on the front row.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series had a practice session, followed by NASCAR Nationwide Series practice. Coors Light Pole qualifying for the Autism Speaks 400 also took place on Friday, with Martin Truex, Jr. and Kasey Kahne on the front row.

Thunderstorms were expected on Friday. However, Mother Nature was kind. Thirty-six trucks showed up at Dover and all 36 are in the race. Bobby Allison, who is the best driver at Dover, was the Grand Marshall and started the engines. There were ten Truck races at Dover, with ten different winners. Will they make it eleven for eleven? Or will a previous winner win the race? We shall see!

18 Kyle Busch pulls ahead and leads from the pole. 33 Ron Hornaday gets by 13 Johnny Sauter for third. The first caution is for 47 Brett Butler spinning and collecting 6 Donnie Neuenberger. For the restart 18 picks the inside. 33 gets by 2 Elliott Sadler for second. 51 Aric Almendinger bumps team mate 15 Johnny Benson to get by.

The second caution comes out for 31 James Beuscher and 56 Taylor Malsam spinning. 31 gets more tires and continues. 18 again chooses the inside. 51 gets by 3 Austin Dillon for fifth. 7 Justin Lofton gets by 3 for sixth. 13 gets by 30 Todd Bodine for eighth. 15 gets by 5 Mike Skinner for fourteenth.

The third caution comes out on lap 53 when 9 Max Papis gets into the wall. 4 Rickie Carmichael, in a back up truck, who started from the rear is the Lucky Dog, and gets back on the lead lap. 18 comes out of the pits first and chooses the inside. 07 Donny Lia takes the wave around.

33 takes the lead and 18 takes it back. 5, 15 and 81 David Starr are three-wide. 15 backs off. 13 gets by team mate 88 Matt Crafton for fourth. The fourth caution comes out when 46 Dennis Setzer blows a left front tire and takes 5 with him. 18 leads them into the pits and has some pit trouble. 47 is back out in a modified truck. 56 comes out first and chooses the inside. 2 lets 18 by for second. 18 takes the lead.13 gets by 56 for third and then gets by 2 for second.

The fifth caution is for debris in Turn 1 from 60 Stacey Compton. 51 Aric Almirola gets the free pass back onto the lead lap. 33 gets by 13 for second and 13 gets back by 33. The sixth caution comes out on lap 122. 12 Mario Gosselin spins trying to get around 4.

23 Jason White leads and 15 battles him for the lead for three laps before taking the lead. 2 again lets 18 by for second. 18 catches 15 for the lead and 15 doesn’t put up a fight. 2 finally gets by 23 for third. 23 falls behind.

The seventh caution comes out when point leader, 17 Timothy Peter, bounces off the wall on lap 145. He heads for the garage. 12 Gosselin is again back onto the lead lap. The Green Flag flies on lap 151. 2 gets  by 15 for second.

He blew the right front tire. 12 Gosselin is again back onto the lead lap. 18 chooses the outside line this time, and they go Green on lap 176. 56 gets into the wall. 33 and 51 battle, with 51 getting by. (Fans are leaving the stands because they do not want to see Kyle Busch win the race.)

The ninth caution comes out with seven laps to go. 13 blows a tire and gets into the wall. This time 60 Compton gets back onto the lead lap. 3 jumped out of gear. 18 and 15 are running out of gas. 18 chooses the outside and they go Green with three laps to go. 15 doesn’t get going.

The tenth caution comes out when 3 blows up. 15 pits for fuel. 51 and 30 got by 18. It will be a Green, White, Checker Finish. 12 Gosselin is again back on the lead lap. 12 pits and can’t get the truck going. They restart on lap 202, as 18 heads for the pits.

51 Aric Almirola wins the Dover 200. This is his first win, and there now have been eleven different leaders in eleven races. 31 Beuscher is second, 7 Lofton third and 4 Carmichael fourth, their best career finishes.  18 finished sixteenth, two laps down. So it was a great race after all!
