Welcome NASCAR fans to my NASCAR blog. For the eleventh race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, they race at the Darlington Raceway in Darlington, SC. Labeled “The Lady In Black” because everyone ends up scraping the wall and making the walls black, Darlington Raceway has some of the best racing in the Series. The track is 1.366 miles long and is shaped like an egg, with one end wider than the other.
Darlington Raceway is also called “The track too tough to tame”. The Lady has a tendency to bite you! Drivers have to race the track, instead each other.
In past years NASCAR came to this track twice. The second race, the Southern 500, was held on Labor Day weekend. Several years ago the date was taken from Darlington and given to California. NASCAR now races at Darlington the day before Mothers’ Day for a night race. And last year the race once again became the Southern 500. It used to be one of the Crown Jewels of NASCAR along with the Daytona 500, the Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis, IN. and the Fall race at Talladega.
Greg Biffle holds the track qualifying record with a speed of 179.445 mph and 27.466 seconds, set 5/9/08. The race record goes to Kyle Busch at 140.350 mph set 5/10/08.
Past winners are: Jeff Gordon with 7 wins (!), Jimmie Johnson with 2 wins, Jeff Burton (2), Mark Martin (2), Greg Biffle (2), Bobby Labonte and Kyle Busch. Mark Martin won his second race here last year.
Action on the track will be shorter, much like it was with the night race at Richmond. So that all driver Fathers will be home to celebrate Mothers’ Day.
