NASCAR Race Review: Richmond

Welcome NASCAR race fans to my NASCAR blog. The Crown Royal Presents the Heath Calhoun 400 at Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, VA. is the tenth race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. No rain this weekend! So that practice and qualifying took place on Friday. Kyle Busch is on the pole with a speed of 127.077. David Reutimann will be starting next to Kyle on the front row.

36 this week is Casey Mears. Braun Racing takes his #32 Nationwide car into Cup this race, with Reed Sorenson in the drivers seat. Reed finished eighth in the NASCAR Nationwide race on Friday night. 64 is Tony Raines. Failing to qualify were Max Papis, Michael McDowell and Dave Blaney.

12 Brad Keselowski is the in-car reporter. He won the Nationwide race last night. 17 Matt Kenseth is in the Crown Royal car with Heath Calhoun on the car. 9 Kasey Kahne is in a retro Bud car depicting Daryl Waltrip in a Jr. Johnson car.

So, here we go! 18 Kyle Busch leads from the pole. 82 Scott Speed gets stuck on the outside. 00 Reutimann and 24 Jeff Gordon battle for second, with 24 moving into second. 1 Jamie McMurray gets by 39 Ryan Newman. 33 Clint Bowyer and 39 battle for eighth. 1 gets by 12 Brad Keselowski. 77 Sam Hornish, Jr. scrapes the wall. 29 Kevin Harvick gets by 00 for third. 42 Juan Pablo Montoya gets by 36 Casey Mears.

1 and 48 Jimmie Johnson battle, with 1 getting by. 88 Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is almost three wide with 14 Tony Stewart and 36, but thinks better of it. 14 gets by 36 and 9 and 17 follow. 87 Joe Nemecheck gets into the wall with a flat tire in front of 24 and the first caution comes out for debris. 18 leads them onto pit road. 48 made a big adjustment and had a lug nut problem and a long pit.

1 slips and 24 gets by. 33 and 1 battle. 9 and 48 battle for thirteenth and 9 gets by. 48 gets back by 9. 24 gets by 29 for second. 99 Carl Edwards and 9 battle, with 99 getting by. 48 and 99 battle. 99 finally gets by. 14 slips and gets lapped. 9 gets by 48. 11 Denny Hamlin and 48 battle for fifteenth and 11 gets by. 18 laps 88 running in 23rd. 48 and 12 battle, with 48 taking the position. 43 A. J. Allmendinger gets by 12.

Green Flag Pitting begins. 24 leads when 18 pits. The second caution is for debris. 48 Jimmie Johnson is the Lucky Dog and gets back onto the lead lap. There are only eight cars on the lead lap! And 23 cars take the wave around to get back on the lead lap with one to go. 24 gets by 33. 29 gets by 00 and 33. 31 and 00 get by 33. 12 and 43 get together.

The third caution is for debris. Looks like a water bottle. And a spring rubber is bouncing around. 29 cars are now on the lead lap. 56 Martin Truex, Jr. gets the free pass, making it 30 cars on the lead lap. 39 takes two tires to lead the race. 29 couldn’t get out of his pit. 24, 39 and 18 are three wide for the lead. 24 and 18 battle for the lead. 18 takes the lead. 31 Jeff Burton and 24 battle for second. 39 and 9 get together. 5 Mark Martin bumps 6 David Ragan. 98 Paul Menard and 88 get together. 71 Bobby Labonte and 88 get together. 88 gets a flat tire and has to pit. He goes down three laps.

39 and 9 battle for twelfth. 9 is high and 39 slides ahead. 31 and 18 battle for the lead, while 7 Robby Gordon is being lapped. 31 takes the lead. 24 gets by 18 for second. 24 takes the lead in traffic. 33 and 18 battle for fourth. 48 and 33 battle for fifth, with 48 getting by. 33 dives below 48 to take it back. 48 gets back by 33. 48 and 18 battle for fourth.

And we come to Green Flag Pitting again. 29 leads. 99 leads. 14 leads. After it all, 24 is back in the lead. 5 dropped a lug nut and fell back to 25th. Mark hasn’t been able to recover. 42 and 33 battle for sixth, with 42 taking the spot. 42 is using the apron to make the turn. 11 and 33 battle for eighth, with 11 getting by. 33 tries the cross over, but he has no forward bite and can’t get by. 99 gets by 33 for ninth. 9 gets up to the wall trying to stay on the lead lap.

47 Marcos Ambrose gets by 33 for tenth. 31 gets by 29 for second. 33 gets by 48 for ninth. 56, 43 and 47 are three wide with 47 getting by 43 and 56. 20 Joey Logano and 9 get together. Both continue racing. And we come again to Green Flag Pitting.  5 was too fast exiting and will have to make a pass through.

The fourth caution comes out when 19 Elliott Sadler blows a tire and spins. 12 Brad Keselowski is the Lucky Dog and gets back on the lead lap. The top five stay out. 18 and 42 get together. The fifth caution comes out when 6 spins. 20 Joey Logano gets the free pass back onto the lead lap. There are now seventeen cars on the lead lap.

24 is leading. 18, 29 and 31 are three wide for second. 18 gets by 31. 29 and 18 battle for second.18 takes the spot. The sixth caution comes out with eleven to go. 77 and 20 got together, with 77 spinning down into the inside wall. 2 Kurt Busch gets the free pass onto the lead lap.

24 chooses the inside for the restart, even though 18 is good on the restart from the outside. 18 takes the lead. 29 and 24 battle for second, but 29 can’t get by. 48, 33 and 11 get into each other and slide across the Finish Line for tenth, eleventh and twelfth.

And Kyle Busch wins the Crown Royal Presents Heath Calhoun 400. Kevin Harvick takes over the lead in points, putting Jimmie Johnson into second. Kyle moves up two spots into third. Jeff Gordon moves up four spots into sixth.
