NASCAR 2010 begins in Daytona International Speedway. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race was postponed from Friday to Saturday night due to rain. So, we NASCAR fans got treated to a double-header on Saturday. The already scheduled NASCAR Nationwide Series race took place Saturday afternoon followed by the NCWTS race.
Here’s some highlights. First the Nationwide race. The Drive4CORD 300 is Danica Patrick’s NASCAR debut. Qualifying was rained out, so the field started the race according to the rule book using owner points from the end of the 2009 season. That put Series Champion Kyle Busch on the pole. Danica, in her #7 Go Daddy car started fifteenth. Chrissy Walace, her Dad, Mike, his brother Kenny and their nephew Steve are all in this race.
In the first caution 98 Paul Menard takes Chrissy out. The second caution was 40 Mike Bliss bumping in the corner and taking out 99 Trevor Bayne. The third caution takes 01 Mike Wallace out. And NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular Tony Stewart, in a Kevin Harvick car leads. Kyle Busch laments that no one wants to work with him. Danica can’t get around the fourth caution and is taken out of the race.
The sixth caution has Dale Earnhardt, Jr. upside -down in a spectacular crash. Bringing out the Red Flag for clean up. Steve Wallace leads. At the end, with Tony Stewart leading, Kyle Busch gets into Brad Keselowski and they both spin out. But no caution comes out until Tony Stewart crosses the Finish line, winning the race.
In the Truck Series, 23 Jason White earned the pole on Thursday. With the 2 of Elliott Sadler second, the 3 of Austin Dillon third and the 4 of Ricky Carmichael fourth! On the first lap Austin gets loose and takes out eight drivers, including Kyle Busch in his own new truck. He came back out, nineteen laps down. And later drives by the leader to get one of them back. Last year’s champion Ron Hornaday got into the wall for the third caution.
Pole sitter White took fuel only after the fourth caution to get back into the lead. The fifth caution had Mike Skinner into the wall. And 2008 champion Johnny Benson is leading. Mario Gosselin crashes out for the sixth caution. Todd Bodine, going for three in a row, scrapes the wall while blocking Timothy Peters for the win. It was quite a mess coming to the Finish Line. But Peters wins the race.
All in all, great racing.
And now for the Daytona 500. The Gatorade Duels took place on Thursday. That set the field for the Daytona 500. Mark Martin starts from the pole, with Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in second. Jimmy Johnson won the first Duel and starts third. Kasey Kahne won the second duel and starts fourth. I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow. I just wanted to get you up to date on the biggest weekend of the NASCAR Season.
