NASCAR’s Top 12

Finishing the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in eighth , is Joe Gibbs Racing #11 Denny Hamlin. Team mates #20 Tony Stewart and #18 Kyle Busch finished the season ninth and tenth. On paper, it looks like Denny did better than his team mates. But that really wasn’t the case. If you’ll recall, Kyle Busch had 8 Sprint cup wins. Denny’s lone win was in his home state of Virginia at Martinsville in the spring.

He has been with JGR for three years and made the Chase all three years. He has had at least one win all three years. Denny won his Gatorade Duel to qualify for the Daytona 500. So, he was off to a good start. In Richmond he led the most laps, but fell short of the win, coming in third behind winner #07 Clint Bowyer and team mate #20 Tony Stewart.

However, he had three DNF’s (Did Not Finish) and six race finishes of 38th or worse. At Talladega he was doing well until he blew a tire and ended up in the Hospital for observation. At one point, he declared he wasn’t good enough to make the Chase. He did make the Chase, once again and finished the season in eighth. Not a great year, but not too shabby, either.
