Dan Lowry 400 Presented by Crown Royal
Richmond International Speedway, Richmond, Va.
This is the tenth race of the season. The Sponsor, Crown Royal held a contest, and Dan Lowry won the contest. So he is the Sponsor of this race in Richmond. This race is run on Saturday night. 109 is Sterling Marlin. Those failing to qualify are Ken Schrader filling in for Dario Franchitti in the 40. He broke his ankle last week in a terrible accident in the Nationwide Series. Scott Wimmer in a fourth RCR car, 34 John Andretti and Jon Wood in the Wood Brothers 21 will also not race. This week the fastest forty-three cars will race. The slowest are going home. I like that. This is an impound race, so Teams cannot work on their cars after qualifying. Since 24 Jeff Gordon changed a starter, he will start from the rear. The Blue Angels did the fly-over.
11 Denny Hamlin, the Hometown Hero leads from the pole. 20 Tony Stewart is passing on the outside. 42 Juan Pablo Montoya and 10 Patrick Carpentier get together. 55 Michael Waltrip gets into the wall. 1 Martin Truex, Jr. gets by 8 Mark Martin for second. 9 Kasey Kahne gets by 18 Kyle Busch for fifth. 9 gets by 41 Reed Sorenson for fourth. 7 Robby Gordon goes down a lap. 11, leading, and 24 Jeff Gordon, trying not to be lapped, get together. 88 Dale Earnhardt, Jr. gets by 42. 9 gets by 1 for second when 1 gets loose.
The first caution comes out during the commercial. 70 Johnny Sauter has a tire getting soft, and gets into the wall. 83 Brian Vickers is the Lucky Dog and gets his lap back. There are thirty-one cars on the lead lap. The green Flag comes out on lap seventy-two. 9, 88, and 29 Kevin Harvick are three-wide. 9 and 88 battle for position. 19 Elliott Sadler is falling back. He didn’t take four tires when he pitted. 88 gets by 1 for fifth. 48 Jimmy Johnson is dropping like a rock. He has a fender rubbing. The second caution is for debris. 26 Jamie McMurray is the Lucky Dog. Out of the pits, it’s 11,8,29,18,88,1,9,07 Clint Bowyer.
00 Michael McDowell, 83 Brian Vickers and 88 make it three-wide. 00 gets into 83 and 83 shoots up to get by. 24 and 00 battle for the Lucky Dog position. The third caution comes out when 42 gets loose and looses it, spinning into the wall. During the pit stops, 41 is pitted ahead of 20. They come in together closely, and Tony hits his jack man trying to get around the car after Reed gets into his stall. Tony short pits and runs into 41, still on the jack, as he exits. (What’s with that?) 24 Jeff Gordon is the Lucky Dog. The Green Flag comes back out on lap 145. 11 is still in the lead. 29 and 18 battle for third. 88 gets sideways. 07 gets by 9. 88 gets by 29. 1 gets by 29. 07 gets into 42.
The fourth caution comes out during the commercial. 01 Regan Smith spins 84 AJ Allmendinger, who finally made a race. 48 doesn’t go a lap down. 84 doesn’t pit until the second time around to lead a lap. So 11 will not get to lead all the laps. Out of the pits, it’s 11,18,8,1,88. The fifth caution comes out when 26, 15 Paul Menard and 83 are three-wide and 15 gets up into 83, sending him and himself into the wall. The sixth caution comes out when 22 Dave Blaney gets into 96 JJ Yeley, sending him into the wall with 99 right behind him. 10 spins out onto the bottom and back onto the track with everyone hitting him all along the way! Those involved are: 10, 38 David Gilliland, 70, 2 Kurt Busch, 17 Matt Kenseth, 42, 00. 31 Jeff Burton, the points leader gets spun, and 01 spins. 48 has damage. The Red Flag comes out for clean-up.
They didn’t throw the caution when 96 got into the wall. But waited until 10 got spun and everyone got into 10 from all angles. 22 let off the throttle and got up into 96 to start the whole thing, with 99 getting into 96 from behind and sending 96 into the wall and spinning 10 down the track and back up the track with cars hitting him all the way down and back up! 20 had an alternater problem, but doesn’t change the battery when he pits. Out of the pits, it’s 11,18,8,1,16 Greg Biffle, 9,24,12 Ryan Newman, 26 and 88 as the top ten. 8 and 18 battle for second. 8 takes second from 18. 88 and 24 battle for fifth.
The seventh caution comes out during the commercial. 84 and 00 get together. We restart with 135 to go. 88 and 8 battle. 88 takes the position. 5 Casey Mears and 26 battle. 88 gets loose and nearly gets into the wall. 20 gets by 1 for sixth. The eighth caution comes out with forty-six to go. 5 and 55 get together. 5 pinches 55 against the wall. Both drive away, and 55 gets into 5’s back end and they stick together. NASCAR parks 55 for running into 5 after they were into the wall. The Green Flag comes out during the commercial with forty to go. 41 Reed Sorenson was the Lucky Dog. Seventeen cars are on the lead lap. 88 and 18 battle for second.
The ninth caution comes out when 26 gets turned into the wall. 28 Travis Kvapil is the Lucky Dog. The Green Flag comes out with thirty to go. 88 takes second from 18. 18 and 88 battle again for second. 11 has a tire going down. 18, 11 and 88 are three-wide for the lead. 88 takes the lead on the outside. 11 is falling back. 41 bounces off the wall. No caution. And 11 is still out there, falling back with a low tire.
The tenth caution comes out when 11 sits on the top of the track with a flat tire. He needed a caution and gave himself one. As a result, NASCAR is parking him for two laps. The Green Flag comes out with five to go. 18 catches 88. 88 and 18 are side-by-side. The eleventh and final caution comes out when 18 spins 88 into the wall. 07 takes the lead. 18 turned right, into 88. It is a Green, White, Checker restart. And 07 Clint Bowyer wins the race. Kyle Busch will need protection leaving the track after taking out Dale Earnhardt, Jr. the fan favorite while he was leading.
