Martinsville, VA.

This is the sixth race of the season. The second short track in a row. Martinsville is the oldest track on the schedule. It is a 1/2 mile paper clip. And it’s freezing in Virginia! Qualifying was on Friday. Jeff Gordon got the pole with a speed of 96.288 mph. 11 Denny Hamlin will start second. Those that failed to qualify are: 45 Kyle Petty, 34 John Andretti, 08 Tony Raines in this week for Burnie Lamar and 78 Joe Nemechek. This week 8 is Aric Almirola. David Reutimann takes over the 44 car of Dale Jarrett who retired after the last race. Taking over the 00 of Reutimann is Michael McDowell. Mike Skinner is in the 84 for AJ Almendinger. 10 Patrick Carpentier made it in on speed, as did 26 Jamie McMurray. 40 Dario Franchitti made it in, as did 49 Ken Schrader. 21 Bill Elliott made it in on speed and didn’t have to use a past Champion provisional. 19 Elliott Sadler is McDonalds today. He hurt his back on Wednesday and Dennis Setzer, who won the Truck race on Saturday here is standing by.
So, here we go! 11 leads the first lap. 24 takes the lead. 8 gets by 11 for second. 26 and 18 Kyle Busch get by 11. 26 and 8 battle. 8 gets hung out on the outside. 42 Juan Pablo Montoya and 84 get together. 18 is stuck up on top and can’t get back in. 21 and 88 Dale Earnhardt, Jr. get together. The first caution comes out on lap 21 when 2 Kurt Busch spins his brother Kyle in the 18. 96 JJ Yeley ends up backward. 21 has a commitment line violation and has to start at the end of the longest line. That is, forty-third, as no one is a lap down. 55 Michael Waltrip is all over the track. 6 David Ragan gets by 11 for third. 48 Jimmy Johnson gets by 11 for fourth.
The second caution comes out when 7 Robby Gordon and 84 Skinner get together, spinning each other out. 21 is the Lucky Dog, and gets his lap back. It’s 24, 48, 26, 9 Kasey Kahne, 12 Ryan Newman, 6, 28 Travis Kvapil, 07 Clint Bowyer, 11 and 49 Schrader out of the pits. As 31 Jeff Burton is leaving the pits and 17 Matt Kenseth is going into his pit, they get together. 17 wasn’t in his pit box after that, but they serviced him anyway, and he will go a lap down. 5 Casey Mears and 43 Bobby Labonte battle for position. The third caution comes out when 8 gets into 43. Everyone behind them get involved.It’s 88, 5, 48. 26 gets by 48.
The fourth caution comes out when 41 Reed Sorenson spins. 21 has damage. 42 and 28 battle. 48 gets by 5. 5 is falling back. 48 takes the lead from 88. 21 and 88 get together. The fifth caution comes out for 96, 84, 77 Sam Hornish, Jr. 77 spins 96 in front of the leaders. 70 Jeremy Mayfield is the Lucky Dog.The sixth caution comes out during the commercial. 44 spins. 7 R. Gordon is the Lucky Dog. 18 gets by 26. 26 gets back by 18. 6 and 07 battle. 88 takes the lead in traffic. 5 is fading. 44 gets loose. 24 is back up to fifth.
The seventh caution is for debris. 15 Paul Menard is the Lucky Dog. It’s 48, 88, 11, 24, 26, 31, 9 out of the pits. 18 gets three-wide out of the pits and can’t get off pit road. 55 has a tire rub. He got into 8 at the restart. 18 makes it three-wide. 11, 88, and 24 battle for second. The eighth caution comes out when 21 spins. 7 R. Gordon is the Lucky Dog. 11 takes the lead. The ninth caution comes out when 49 gets spun. 2 is also involved. 17 Kenseth is the Lucky Dog. 11 is pitting, but others stay out. There are twenty-three cars on the lead lap. It’s 48, 24, 88, 26, 31, 20 Tony Stewart and 6. At half way, 48 is leading.
The tenth caution comes out when 77 spins. 29 Kevin Harvick and 18stay ahead of the leader to remain on the lead lap. 88 makes it three-wide on the top and looses spots. 24 takes the lead. The eleventh caution comes out when 28 gets into 10 and 10 spins. They stack up behind them. 18 goes behind the wall with rear end problems. The twelfth caution comes out when 7 hits the curb and gets into 10. 88 and 24 battle for the lead. The thirteenth caution comes out when 12 Newman spins into 48. 16 Greg Biffle got into 12 and 12 got into 48. 41 Sorenson and 2 get together. 12 would have been the Lucky Dog, but he was involved in the caution.
The fourteenth caution comes out when 8 gets into 55 and 17 gets into 7. 01 Regan Smith is the Lucky Dog. 20 and 31 battle for position. 88 takes the lead. The fifteenth caution comes out when 38 David Gilliland spins 17. 31 gets by 26 for third. The sixteenth caution comes out when 17 gets into 38 to spin him. 17 is held two laps for aggressive driving. 22 Dave Blaney stays out to lead. 49 Schrader is the Lucky Dog. At the restart 22 doesn’t get going. 44 had stayed out and takes the lead. 8 is up in smoke.
The seventeenth caution comes out during the commercial. 41 is stuck at pit entrance with a transmission problem. 31 stays out to lead. 12 Newman is the Lucky Dog. 49 is smoking. The eighteenth caution comes out when 49 is slipping in his own oil. 28 Kvapil is the Lucky Dog. 31 is leading. Hendrick’s four drivers are fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth. 11 gets by 83 Brian Vickers for second. 11 and 31 battle for the lead. 11 takes the lead. 88 gets by 24. 31 slips. 24 gets by 88. 44 is up in smoke and goes to the garage. 88 and 48 battle. 00 spins, but keeps on going. 24 gets by 31 for second. 48 and 99 Carl Edwards battle for forth. 48 takes it.
11 Denny Hamlin wins the Goodies Cool Orange 500. The top ten are: 11, 24, 31, 48, 20, 88, 5, 26, 99 and 07. 99 ran out of gas on the last lap. 31 Burton takes over the Points lead. 18 Kyle Busch falls back to fifth. And there you have it. The Goodies Cool Orange 500 from Martinsville, Va. Race number six of thirty-six. I hope you enjoyed my rac review.
