Welcome race fans to Bristol, TN. The site of the fifth race of the season. Some call Bristol a bull ring. Others a Coliseum. It is the fastest half mile in the world! Qualifying was rained out on Friday. So they line up according to last year’s Owner points. Thirty-sixth through forty-third place are: 2 Kurt Busch, the most recent past Champion, 44 Dale Jarrett, another past Champion, 83 Brian Vickers, ninth in points this year, 00 David Reutimann, 55 Michael Waltrip, 49 Ken Schrader, 78 Joe Nemachek, and 84 this week Mike Skinner, in for A J Almendinger. Not making the race are: 34 John Andretti, 21 this week Jeff Green and 10 Patrick Carpentier. 27 Jacques Villeneuve wasn’t entered. This is Dale Jarrett’s final points race. He got a standing ovation at the driver meeting. Today Aric Almirola is in the 8 car instead of Mark Martin, who is not racing in all the races.
It was raining last night, so today it is a green track with no rubber on the track. Ned Jarrett, Dale’s father, throws the Green Flag. And they’re off! 48 Jimmy Johnson leads the first lap from the pole. 17 Matt Kenseth is moving up on the outside. 20 Tony Stewart is on the outside, but is loosing spots. 12 Ryan Newman had to start from the rear after changing an engine. 07 Clint Bowyer takes the lead. 18 Kyle Busch gets into 45 Kyle Petty and sends him up the track, but there is no caution.
The first caution comes out on lap 50. It is a competition caution so everyone can check their tires. 28 Travis Kvapil is the Lucky Dog and gets his lap back. Thirty-seven cars are on the lead lap. 17 had problems with the jack in the pits. The second caution comes out when 7 Robby Gordon spins. 78 is the Lucky Dog. 49 and 7 got together. Back to racing, 31 Jeff Burton and 5 Casey Mears battle for position. 20 takes second from 48. 11 Denny Hamlin and 5 battle for sixth. 29 gets by 48. 99 Carl Edwards gets by 88 Dale Earnhardt, Jr. 20 catches 07 who is stuck in traffic.
The third caution is for debris. 38 David Guilliland is the Lucky dog. 07, coming out of the pits, gets stuck behind incoming traffic. 43 Bobby Labonte had a tire violation. 9 Kasey Kahne was too fast exiting the pits. 55 Michael Waltrip stays out to lead. Out of the pits, it’s 20, 48, 29 Kevin Harvick, 11 Denny Hamlin and 07, the top five. We get the Green Flag on lap 102. 20 takes the lead. 22 Dave Blaney is falling back. 11 gets by 29. 31 gets by 18.
The forth caution comes out during the commercial. 22 spins. There are thirty-four cars on the lead lap. 28 is again the Lucky Dog. 31 tries to get by the lapped car of 7. 00 and 6 David Ragan get together. 44 has a tire going down and has to pit. 11 gets by 48 for second. The fifth caution involves 43, 49, 12, 26 Jamie McMurray, 40 Dario Franchitti, and 15 Paul Menard. 40 got up into 26 and they get together, collecting everyone else. 96 J J Yeley is the Lucky dog. It’s 20, 11, 48, 07, 31 out of the pits.
11 takes the lead when 20 has to slow down for 96 getting into the wall. 15 is black flagged for his back panel flapping and has to pit to take it off. 07 and 48 battle for second. 48 and 20 battle. 48 is falling back. 12 gets black flagged. There are twenty cars on the lead lap. 20 threads the needle for position. 41 Reed Sorenson makes an unscheduled pit stop. 2 gets by 17 for tenth. 96 who is in eighteenth gets lapped. 29 gets by 20 for second. 48, 07, 40 are three-wide.
The sixth caution comes out when 40 gets into the wall. He got dumped by 15. 42 Juan Pablo Montoya, trying to get his lap back runs into the leader 11. (He should have been black Flagged for passing under caution). 11, 18, 20 are three-wide out of the pits. 11 comes back into pits for repairs. There are now only sixteen cars on the lead lap. 00 pit out of his stall. 18 is in the lead. The seventh caution comes out when 18 spins! His steering stuck. So the points leader and defending race Champion spins into the wall. 18 deck lid is loose and he comes back into the pits. 29 and 31 battle for second. 29 gets the position. 9 was the Lucky Dog. 16 Greg Biffle gets by 99. 29 takes the lead from 20. 20 takes the lead back.
48 gets into 44 and 44 almost gets into the wall. There is no caution. 20 puts 18 two laps down. The eighth caution comes out when 48 and 31 get together. Both spin, and both save it. But the caution comes out. We come back from the commercials after the Green comes out. 29 takes the lead. 9 gets into 77 Sam Hornish, Jr. 77 saves it. All forty-three cars are on the track. 29 and 20 battle for the lead. 20 takes the lead. 11 gets by 07 for fourth. 48 is falling back. 16 gets by 48. 83 Brian Vickers gets into the wall and they finally throw the ninth yellow with eleven to go. Brian’s right front tire went down and he got into the wall. 29 gives up second to pit. 20, 11, 88 stay out. 11 takes the lead.
The tenth and final caution comes out when 29 spins 20. The top ten are: 11, 31, 29, 07, 88, 16, 99, 9, 38, and 8. It will be a Green, White, Checker finish. 31 takes the lead. 11 doesn’t pick up the fuel at the restart and falls way back. 31 Jeff Burton wins the race. Richard Childress Racing takes the first three positions. 31, 29, 07, for the first time ever. The top ten for the finish are: 31, 29, 07, 16, 88, 11, 9, 8, 38, and 17.
